What is a hernia and how can I avoid getting one. This is a common question raised by men who either believe that they have the symptoms of a hernia, or have been talking other guys who has suffered and been treated for a one.
A hernia happens when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained. These contents usually portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue are enclosed in the thin membrane that lines the inside of the cavity. Although the term hernia can be used for bulges in other areas, it most often is used to describe hernias of the lower torso (abdominal wall hernias). If you suspect that your health concern is related to the symptoms of a hernia, then you must seek medical help, however this will relate to other health issues that maybe troubling you.
Hernias by themselves may be asymptomatic, but nearly all have a potential risk of having their blood supply cut off (becoming strangulated). Having a hernia can be a very painful experience so it is important to have it treated sooner than later. If the hernia sac contents have their blood supply cut off at the hernia opening in the abdominal wall it becomes a medical and surgical emergency. Many people relate this particular condition to men, when in fact women can also suffer from having one too.
Different types of abdominal wall hernias include the following:
Inguinal (groin) hernia: Making up 75% of all abdominal wall hernias and occurring up to 25 times more often in men than women, these hernias are divided into two different types, direct and indirect. The two are more commonly known to be located in the groin area above where the skin crease at the top of the thigh joins the torso (the inguinal crease), but they have slightly different origins. These hernias can similarly appear as a bulge in the inguinal area. Distinguishing between the direct and indirect hernia, however, is important as a clinical diagnosis.
More information on both types of hernia below, however hearing it straight from the horse’s mouth is a much safer bet so as to speak to have your condition determined. It is the doctor that has all the answers and the cures for treating your hernia.
Indirect inguinal hernia:
An indirect hernia follows the pathway that the testicles made during pre-birth development. It descends from the abdomen into the scrotum. This pathway normally shuts before birth but may remain a possible place for a hernia. Sometimes the hernia sac may protrude into the scrotum. This type of hernia can occur in people of age groups.
Direct inguinal hernia:
The direct inguinal hernia occurs slightly to the inside of the site of the indirect hernia, in a place where the abdominal wall is naturally slightly thinner. It rarely will protrude into the scrotum. The direct hernia is normally known to occur in the middle-aged and elderly because they have weak abdominal walls through age.
The sign of hernia is a soft, bulge or swelling under the skin and can be painless, cause slight discomfort or can be very painful indeed.
Hernias tend to get larger with time and can make it difficult for you to do normal every day activities. In many a case of a patient having a hernia it could have been prevented. Strain is one of the main factors behind a hernia occurring.
Some causes known are persistent heavy coughing, being overweight or pregnant, injury or surgery, lifting, carrying or pushing heavy loads, straining to produce a bowel movement, and men who have an enlarged prostate can experience problems when urinating (straining).
As stated earlier all age groups can be affected, hernias in babies are usually due to congenital (present at birth) weakness. A common type of hernia in babies is an umbilical hernia. This appears near the navel and results from a weakness in the wall of the abdominal wall at birth. Never ignore the symptoms of any unfamiliar illness that you have because it can hamper any success of a cure happening. Do not let embarrassment hold you back from visiting a doctor, remember this is a common ailment in men and women so you are not on your own.
